About my grandmother, Gloria Ann Antonioli, and her move to America.

My Mother, Gloria Ann Antonioli was born in Pescara, Italy on May 12,1925. She arrived for the first time in the USA on the “SS Roma”, leaving Naples, Italy on August 18, 1932, arriving in the Port of New York City, Ellis Island on August 27, 1932. Gloria was 7 years old, along with her brother Aldino, who was 9 years old at the time, also born in Pescara, Italy. Hand written notes by Gloria’s name on the ships manifest, (see attached link) indicates she had been in the ship’s hospital the entire voyage. On a separate manifest, showing Gloria as DETAINED, at Ellis Island, and in the hospital for 2 weeks, AFTER ARRIVING AT ELLIS ISLAND, she had Scarlett Fever. (I’m in possession of her birth document.)

Giuseppe Mattiolik, is listed on Gloria and Aldino’s passport as their escort, on the SS Roma, leaving Naples, IT, arriving at Ellis Island, on 27 Aug 1932. Giuseppe Mattiolik 37, his wife Rosa 30, and their 12 year old son, Nunizio lived at 1215 Gerritt St., Phil., PA, which is about 7 blocks from the family home at 1008 Passyunk Ave., Phil., PA. Family lore has always been that Gloria and Aldino came to the USA alone as children on the boat. As my research indicates, they in fact were escorted by the Mattiolik family, who lived near the family home in PA. I’m going to assume that my great grandmother, Rachele Mormile Orlando, b. 1869, d. 1954, knew the Mattiolik family and made these arrangements to have Gloria and Aldino escorted from Italy to the USA. (I am in possession of this passport.)

My Mothers’ father, Domenico Antonioli, b. 1889 Penne, Italy, d. 1951 Alex., VA. had left Italy arriving in NY 23 May 1925, leaving my Mother, in Italy with her Mother, and three older siblings, Rachel, Eugene, and Aldino. My grandmother, left Italy in 1929 with the two older children, Rachel and Eugene, leaving both my mother, Gloria and Aldino in Italy in the care of a cousin. My Mother, Gloria fondly remembers this cousin, and in later years went back to Italy twice to visit her.

The problem was both Gloria and Aldino had been born in Italy, which presented a long, time consuming process of getting the official paperwork to allow Gloria and Aldino to come into the USA. It took 3 years to complete this documentation that would allow both Gloria and Aldino permission to enter the USA. Gloria and brother Aldino were left in the care of a cousin from Aug. 1929 to Aug. 1932. The other children and my grandmother, were all born in the USA. (I’m in possession of some of these documents.)

I just think this is amazing. This is SO COOL. This also makes me a little sad… My grandmother and I were really close and when she died a few years ago, it was really difficult for me. I still wear a ring of hers every single day, it’s my most prized possession (not to mention it’s really awesome and pretty).

I am so glad I could see this! I am close to tears.
